Keuka Lake Volunteer Stream Monitoring Opportunities

Public Information Session

Contact: Adrianna Hirtler, Bio-monitoring Coordinator for the Community Science Institute adrianna@communityscience.org

The Community Science Institute (CSI) will be offering a free public information session on Thursday, July 28, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 pm in the basement auditorium of the Yates County building in Penn Yan. The topic will be volunteer bio-monitoring opportunities on Keuka Lake tributaries. Biological monitoring for BMI (benthic macroinvertebrates) is a reliable, cost-effective way to get an overall picture of water quality. Water quality is influenced by activities on both land and water that may be taking place upstream of a sampling location. CSI will be soliciting suggestions from attendees for sampling locations and dates. Sampling and analysis sessions will take place at various Keuka Lake locations at a later date. Training will be provided for volunteers.

CSI, based out of Ithaca, NY, is a not-for-profit organization that partners with community volunteers to monitor water quality at hundreds of stream and lake locations in Finger Lakes and Upper Susquehanna watersheds. Sample analysis is carried out in CSI’s own state-certified water testing lab. Data from CSI monitoring events are published in a searchable online database (database.communityscience.org) that is available to the general public and used by citizens, researchers, journalists, policy-makers and others. CSI data has been used to help drive and support actions that have led to improvements in water quality while cultivating water stewardship in our communities. CSI's biological monitoring program has been supporting volunteers in the collection of quality data for over a decade and BMI results going back to 2010 should soon be added to the online database.
