Sustainable Vineyards, Best Management Practices for Protecting Seneca Lake

  • Thursday, May 6, 2021, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The increasing vitality of the wine country in the Finger Lakes has brought an abundance of new winery operations and tourism to the region. With growing concern about the health of Seneca Lake, this webinar takes a dive into the winery practices that help protect the lake.

Join viticulture experts for a discussion on best vineyard management practices, and the decisions necessary to lead sustainable winery operations. Scott Osborn, owner of Fox Run Vineyards and John Santos, Vineyard Manager of Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards, will be joined by Rochester-based food/wine radio show host Michael Warren Thomas to discuss current methods for reducing the impact of increasing agriculture in the region and enhancing the environment through meaningful and consistent changes.

John Santos is the Vineyard Manager for Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards. In 2009, Santos helped Hazlitt receive the Schuyler County Conservation Farmer of the Year award. Sustainable and lake-friendly vineyard practices Santos has implemented at Hazlitt include a composting program using the winery’s waste, such as grape pomace, out in the vineyards.

Scott Osborn is a Rochester native, who traveled the country and world before love of cold-climate wines drew him back to the Finger Lakes. He purchased Fox Run Vineyards in 1994 and operates the winery today with his wife and co-owner, Ruth Osborn. Over the years, Scott has been an active member and leader of local and national organizations that are vital to the wine industry, such as WineAmerica, New York Wine Industry Alliance, and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

Michael Warren Thomas has established himself as an authority on the region’s restaurant, wine, agriculture, and horticulture scene. He broadcasts live from restaurants, wineries, and garden stores. His weekend morning radio shows on WYSL 1040-AM, “Naturally Green,” “The Grapevine,” “Discover the Finger Lakes, is required to listen for folks who like to keep up with the region's wine and restaurant scene.
